FERAL CATS-ABANDONED CATS & KITTENS IN NEWBURGH

Lisa McEwen, is the Lead Contact of this Rescue Project at Van Cleft in the City of Newburgh. The following Rescues are currently involved in this Rescue Project:

Precious Paws, Inc., STRAY HELP, Newburgh SCATS, HVSPCA, and AnimalKindNY. In addition, many other rescues are supporting and are involved:  Pets Alive, Middletown, Dr. Laurie Stein of Cornwall, NY and numerous local volunteers.

Currently to date, from December 1, 2016 – January 17, 2017, 14 cats have already been removed from Van Cleft by local rescues and have been relocated to safe shelter off of the property. Currently, and we can provide 24 hour video surveillance of this, there are only 12 cats remaining on property. Not the 35 plus, that has been reported.

The local rescues have been working diligently since December in removing these cats for FREE at no charge to the taxpayers of Newburgh and we are committed to removing and relocating ALL of the remaining cats on the property to safety.

The vote for Project Cat to come in and “humanely euthanize” (kill) any “unadoptable cat”, because it was feral, was voted down on January 9th, 2017. The local rescues have been given a one month period to report back (around February 15th, I believe) to the City Council regarding their progress at the Van Cleft site.

Our question is: Why should taxpayers have to pay an outside, non-local organization, $2000.00 of taxpayers money, to kill cats when the local rescue organizations have offered to remove them ALL FOR FREE AND WE ARE NOT KILLING THEM, WE ARE LETTING THEM LIVE!!! This is outrageous and deplorable. Are these the values the City wants to portray to its citizens? We are hoping this proposition NEVER comes up again.

The Council has received a commitment letter from AnimalKind, Hudson, NY stating that they will take in ALL of the cats, which they have been doing. We also have a local Veterinarian working with us, (Dr. Laurie Stein), from Cornwall. They are both willing to update/vaccinate ALL cats (PRO BONO) before they are relocated to AnimalKind, Hudson, NY. Again, at no cost to the City.

The owner of the property, Michael Santucci, has a written letter that PROHIBITS Project Cat from entering his property and/or trapping or they will be arrested for trespassing and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. This is private property and he is not allowing anyone but local rescues to enter his property. (I have those documents.) Unfortunately, the newspaper media has caused a “negative media firestorm” regarding this issue and the property owner is being harassed by people driving by his house and taking pictures at all times of the day and reporters and Council Members knocking on his door to question him or interview him. Cars are also parking in front of his house to “sit and watch.” The owner has had to put up no trespassing signs, which people are still not adhering to.

These are not dying, mistreated, malnourished animals, as being reported by the media. All cats that have been trapped since November 2016, have been cleared medically. Most, if not all, all of these cats have already been TNR’d. So, they have already been spayed, neutered and vaccinated. They are not breeding and multiplying, as previously reported.

  • Relocation is not the answer for outside cats, but in this SPECIFIC, one time situation, we are willing to do it. The City needs to adopt TNR as the future solution for the overpopulation cats in the City of Newburgh. Not, trap and KILL!!!!!

PLEASE LET THE CATS LIVE AND BE RELOCATED FOR FREE. WHEN LOCAL RESCUES ARE DONE TRAPPING, THERE WILL BE NO MORE OUTSIDE CATS AT 14 VAN CLEFT.  DON’T KILL THEM FOR UNNECESSARY REASONS WITH TAXPAYER MONEY.  USE THE $2000.00 of “KILL MONEY” to SUPPORT OUR LOCAL YOUTH.
